Police Release More Details of McLean Bank Robbery

MCLEAN, VA – Fairfax County  police yesterday released additional details about Wednesday’s armed robbery of the Wachovia Bank at Chain Bridge and Dolley Madison Blvd. in McLean.

Currently police  said they have no pictures to release that may have been taken by the bank’s cameras.

A bank holdup alarm alerted police to the armed robbery.

Police said they do not disclose the amount of money stolen in bank robberies.

No one was injured during the robbery. No arrests have been made.

7 am. Thursday Nov. 24 – Fairfax County police have released no further details about yesterday’s armed robbery of the Wachovia Bank at 1300 Chain Bridge Road.

4:30 pm  Wednesday, Nov. 23. Update: This Wachovia branch was in the news Oct. 7, 2003. Two men broke into the home of New Hampshire Sen. Judd Gregg, attacked his wife and forced her at knifepoint to withdraw money from the bank. Kathleen Gregg, 52, had been shopping and returned home about 9:30 a.m. She was soon confronted by two men — one with a knife and demanding cash, The Washington Post reported.

3:39pm Update: A representative of Wells Fargo Bank (which owns Wachovia) said, “Because this robbery is still under investigation by the local police, we can’t comment on the specifics of the robbery (how much money was taken, etc.).”

MCLEAN, VA – A man entered the Wachovia Bank at 1300 Chain Bridge Road, around 9:13 a.m. and robbed two tellers, a 42-year-old woman and a 63-year-old woman, on Wednesday, November 24. The suspect displayed a gun, demanded money and fled with an undisclosed amount of cash.

The suspect was described as black, in his mid to late 30s, about 5 feet 8 inches tall and between 150 and 170 pounds. He was wearing an “elderly white man” costume mask and dark clothing. Robbery detectives believe this suspect may be linked to prior robberies in the county. No one was injured.

Staff members at Wachovia refused to answer any questions about the robbery including whether there were customers in the bank at the time. They referred all inquiries to their corporate headquarters in North Carolina. Wachovia was acquired by Wells Fargo Bank in 2008.
