McLean Centennial Committee Seeks “Pieces of Time”

MCLEAN, VA – McLean & Great Falls Celebrate Virginia, our centennial celebration committee, is searching for “pieces of time”:  A school slate, milk cans, horseshoes, men’s and women’s clothing circa 1910, a shaving strap (also known as a disciplinary tool)  and a straight edge razor.

“We’re looking for things that would have been part of this community in 1910,” said Page Shelp, co-chair of the committee that’s planning McLean’s 100th birthday party, 11 am. – 5 p.m., Sat. June 26.

The party will be held at the McLean Community Center with Charles Robb, former Virginia governor and senator as the honorary chair, and Vince Callahan, former Virginia delegate, as master of ceremonies.

The artifacts of ordinary life at the turn of the last century will show “what life was like then. People don’t realize this was a farming community. This was a huge milk producing area,” Shelp said.

The one-day celebration will include speakers recalling McLean’s past, period games for children, a collection of old photographs of McLean, food, and a barbershop quartet, according to the group’s poster.

Here’s a brief history of McLean.
